LOCRIAN (2020)
5/4/2020
Despite already being an introvert, aspects of quarantine have highlighted parallels between my personal/emotional life and the current state of the world. As of 5/1/2020, 23 trace monotypes have been made to process these parallel ideas that include isolation, destruction of spaces, secrecy and solitude. Without a press these small prints are made from home with a paper plate, a pen and acrylic paint.
The title Locrian comes from the Locrian mode, a diatonic musical scale uncommonly used in current music due to its particular sound. Like the Locrian mode, the progression of the prints is structured but unique. Each print reflects and responds to its predecessor and this response is varied even when an image is duplicated by being traced again.
Though quarantine has gone on longer than 23 days I've refrained from moving too far ahead in this project. The pace serves to catch up and reflect without overstepping where I reside now. I had originally planned to burn the prints at the end of quarantine to signify a new chapter and move forwards. However, I've become attached to their snapshot quality and maybe preserving them would be a better testament to development.
